Currently, electricity provides for only 21% of the final energy consumed in the US. Yet, continued greening of the electricity sector generation mix coupled with an evolving electric grid that is much more dynamic and flexible is enabling an opportunity to advance consumer adoption of more energy efficient end-use electrification technologies. Increased adoption of efficient electrification technologies – and specifically electric transportation – has the potential to impact system planning, while also providing increased consumer choices and significant societal benefits.
This session will focus on the following:

- What end-use technologies are emerging and which have the greatest potential impact for society and consumers?

Design Thinking: Creating Customer-Centric: DSM/DER Programs, Marketing and Experiences

Why did it take 80 years for luggage designers to put wheels on suitcases? Sometimes obvious solutions are hard to see…and momentum and habits set in. Developed at Stanford University’s Institute of Design (the ‘d.school’), Design Thinking can be applied to any challenge. Initially used in tech companies such as Apple (the computer mouse is an early win), then to service industries such as the Mayo Clinic’s award-winning patient care process and Bank of America’s hyper-successful “Keep the Change®” program, it’s now ready to be part of the energy industry.
Design thinking can create new ways of looking at old problems, or to dive into brand new areas. Challenges such as rate design, connected/smart homes, EVs, demand response, energy efficiency, or low-income programs can all benefit from using customer empathy as starting point in design.
In this utility-only workshop, attendees will learn through a hands-on approach how to extract key insights from ethnographic research where we delve deeply into customers’ needs, wants, and fears. You will then “peel the onion” to discover why customers feel and act the way they do. Attendees will then move through the design process, creating Points of View, “How Might We…” statements, and then onto brainstorming for new and different solutions that customers just might like enough to share on social media! Finally, we’ll talk about the importance of rapid-rough prototyping as well as storytelling.

Ten hours of learning will be supplemented by interactive group activities and handouts to ensure retention of the information, put to practice the thought processes required, and not be bored! AESP’s “Utilities-only” DSM Program Manager Workshop will equip you with all the necessary tools to successfully manage a DSM program, or your portion of it. This very thorough 1.5-day Program Manager Workshop will teach you everything you need to know to research, plan, design, launch, market, evaluate and report on a DSM program. It’s a start-to-finish, A-to-Z, soup to nuts on program management. We really can’t think of another way you can acquire all this knowledge, unless you have very patient colleagues from all the different areas to teach you. And even if you do have great colleagues, will they have snazzy handouts, interactive group activities (with prizes to be won!) and entertaining, non-snoozy trainers who will ensure that you retain the information?
