AESP CA Chapter DER Series

Leveraging Connected Communities and Utilizing
Buildings as a Grid Resource

November 10, 2020 • 3pm EST (Noon PST)

NREL presents a multiple year study and inventory of Connected Communities (CCs) nationwide.  As demonstrated by presented examples, Connected Communities can provide real and scalable solutions to mitigate energy costs, enable more flexibility in grid operations, and offer choices in meeting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions goals. One of the keys to developing connected communities at scale is addressing real time barriers to installing grid efficient and connected infrastructure in under-utilized customer segments.

  • Connected Communities provide utilities with on-demand Flexible Capacity and support Resource Adequacy year-round
  • Traditionally underserved markets, small to medium commercial buildings, can be leveraged as a grid resource today by removing participation barriers and utilizing ADR technology
  • Demand response will play a pivotal role in the transition by acting as the bridge between traditional generation assets, distribution planning and the new needs of the dynamic DER-driven grid of the 21st century.
