How Smart Thermostat Data can Improve the DR Customer Experience

Sure smart thermostats are ‘smart’ and many are now ENERGY STAR® certified to save energy, but can they be used in ways to help the industry make decisions that increase impact and deliver better experiences for the customer? A single smart thermostat can produce nearly 9,000 lines of data per month and hundreds of thousands of data points annually. What is this ‘big data’ and does it offer anything other than a higher resolution look at energy consumption? A recent partnership between CLEAResult and ecobee suggests that linking insights from rigorous data analytics with human comfort feedback mechanisms can produce a much improved customer experience during demand response events. This work may not only lead to higher customer satisfaction and lower demand response program churn, but also to persistent energy efficiency savings as well.
