Gang and Gigawatts:
What gang violence prevention can teach us about energy efficiency marketing
July 6, 2017  •  1:00 pm (ET)

Working in Chicago in gang violence prevention research, Dre Voelkel learned valuable lessons on changing deeply embedded norms through effective messaging. Lessons from this research outside of the industry can inform marketing, education, and messaging within the energy industry by illuminating how message construction deeply ties to subconscious behavioral adaption.  Applied case studies -- a Northwestern natural gas segmentation project and a multi-lingual message testing study of water usage in California -- will demonstrate how these strategies can lead to increased energy savings.

In this Brown Bag we will specifically explore:
  • How understanding and eliciting customer’s definition of the problem (“problem definition”) impacts programming success
  • How to use empirically-backed strategies to craft messages that will have the maximum impact on behavior change.
