RTU Optimization With a Repair, Retrofit, and Replace Business Practice...
and no incentives! Brown Bag

April 13, 2017  •  1:00 pm (EST)

DNV GL recently completed a NREL-funded demonstration of SQ3 (Sustainable Quality 3) which combines contemporary case studies, tools, online calculators, and third-party reference materials into a user-friendly three-part package of Quality Inventory (QI), Quality Maintenance (QM), and Quality Replacement (QR). Many of these materials were developed through the Advanced RTU Campaign ( This holistic operational model allows users to plan and pursue correct rooftop air conditioning unit (RTU) optimization using a proper inventory (QI), regularly scheduled testing and maintenance (QM), and planned replacement (QR). SQ3 creates benefits for reducing energy costs; reducing emergency downtime, service calls and replacements; optimizing tenant comfort and indoor air quality; using a planned approach to manage HVAC equipment and maintenance costs; and introducing advanced controls.  The 2016 pilot successfully engaged 10 participants to test the SQ3 model with 16 buildings and a total 169 RTUs. Each participant was motivated by the potential benefits; no financial incentives were offered.

Key Learning Objectives:

  • Learn about SQ3 and how is a natural path to optimize HVAC systems through a clear, logical operations management approach
  • How to move contractors to adopt sustainability behaviors without incentives
