Background
The AESP Foundation is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3), a subsidiary of Association of Energy Services Professionals (AESP), which is a 501(c)(6). AESP, established in 1989, is a member-based organization that provides professional development programs, facilitates a network of energy practitioners, and promotes the transfer of knowledge and experience. Our members’ work in the energy services industry and represent electric and natural gas utilities, public benefits fund organizations, regulatory and non-profit entities, vendors, manufacturers and consulting firms. AESP hosts several national and regional conferences throughout the year; conducts training on a host of energy topics; and delivers practical and topical information to its members in a variety of formats.
Scope
To meet prospective student needs and energy industry demands, The AESP Foundation is developing and implementing a multi-level outreach program that inspires students to enter the energy field and encourages them to seek degrees that will enable them to find immediate gainful employment with long-term growth and advancement potential. The initial target is universities, colleges, community colleges and technical schools. The second phase of the program would reach out to high schools on a more informal level and include developing information materials, scheduling presenters for career day activities, and establishing student run energy-based forums.
The program would include, but is not limited to, collaborating with leading colleges and universities to assist with cohesive energy-related curriculum development, partnering with like-minded energy-based organizations to share vital resources, and creating a comprehensive information clearinghouse for students considering a career in energy.
Goals
AESP is dedicated to advancing the careers of energy professionals. This program will extend AESP’s sphere of influence into the collegiate arena in an effort to showcase educational, scholarship and employment opportunities to students interested in pursuing a career within the energy field. The program is a multi-level initiative designed to:
- Explore ways to increase student’s interest in pursuing an energy-related profession
- Collaborate with colleges and universities to develop and/or augment practical energy-related curricula and degrees that are immediately applicable in the industry
- Develop and maintain a clearinghouse of useful information to include:
a. a listing for students to determine the appropriate school to attend for undergraduate and graduate degrees based on curriculum and degrees offered
b. a ranking of those schools based on quality/quantity of degrees/disciplines offered, tuition and other costs, location, etc
c. a current list of available energy-related scholarships, grants and stipends
- Improve paid internship opportunities within the industry for undergraduates.
- Create a job bank to match utility employment needs with recent graduates.
